Eradication of Bad Habits Is Flatly Impossible
But you can change them leveraging motivation or capabilities
Bad habits cannot be eradicated, they can only be replaced by other habits.
You don’t even need to know the science behind habits to succeed.
The actual processes which happen in human brain while developing and triggering habits were discovered in the last 15-20? years, but people were able to change their destructive behaviors for millennia.
When in 2012 I decided to change my life I had not a slightest clue about habits formation. However in a very short time I was able to ditch a few lifelong, deeply ingrained bad habits (overeating sweets, playing computer games, overindulgence in reading fiction) and in the next few months I developed dozens of good habits.
Motivation
When your motivation is powerful enough it will take place of knowledge and skills. This is a discovery of Stanford professor who studies behavioral change. Change happens when your capabilities and motivation are higher than inertia.
Motivation comes from epiphany or self-reflection. My motivation came from both. For quite a long time I had the feeling that my life led me nowhere, or at least nowhere good. I didn’t see the way out…
